- The bike is hilly and windy, and several first-timers found it very hard
- 07:00 start in April means a cold morning, typically 6 to 13 °C (43 to 55 °F)
- No parking at the centre: use Portland Castle car park or Mulberry Avenue
- Open roads; a rider fell in 2025 and was helped by the sweeper
- Swim-time waves can separate you from friends who entered together

What racers and reviewers say
- Eventrac reviews, Osprey Sprint Triathlon (56 written reviews)Raced 2026 · aggregator · Positive
Eventrac shows 4.9/5 from 57 ratings and 56 written reviews across April 2024, 2025 and 2026. Reviewers agree on a friendly, beginner-spotting marshal team, a funny briefing and good value. The bike is the talking point: a long climb out of the leisure centre, wind on the heights and sea views as the reward, and several first-timers found it harder than expected. Organiser's own review system, so the sample leans positive.
“Marshals were so helpful in the transition zone.”
- Eventrac review, Daisy C. (2025)Raced 2025 · aggregator · Positive
Called the bike very hilly and windy and the start cold and early, but loved the day and praised transition marshals. Noted that swim-time waves meant she did not see friends who entered with her.
- Eventrac review, Sharon M. (2025)Raced 2025 · aggregator · Mixed
Found it very hard for a first triathlon: very early, very hilly and a bit congested, though the marshals, atmosphere and organisation were fantastic.
“It was very hard for a first triathlon.”
- Eventrac review, Rebekah C. (2025)Raced 2025 · aggregator · Positive
A total beginner who loved the welcoming team and the route, with a heck of a hill and views as the reward.
- Eventrac review, John C. (2024)Raced 2024 · aggregator · Positive
Regular who opens his season here. Calls the bike challenging but worth it for sea views, and the run an out-and-back on the causeway, also with sea views. Excellent value compared with races around the country.

He and his brother did their first triathlon here. Lots of marshals at every stage, a very cold start but sunshine at the finish, and a humorous briefing in the sports hall that eased nerves.
- Eventrac reviews, Matthew C. and Anabel F. (2026)Raced 2026 · aggregator · Positive
One 2026 entrant asked for the wind generator to be switched off for a year, a nod to how windy Portland can be. The other had a great first triathlon except for a results timing problem.
- Alan and Anna blog, Osprey Sprint Triathlon race reportRaced 2015 · blog · Positive
A 2015 report from a visiting age-grouper (9th overall). Describes the seeded pool swim up and down lanes, a bike that climbs from the leisure centre to the heights, windy on top and almost all up or down, and a flat, winding run with narrow beach sections and a causeway. Found the marshals plentiful and friendly and the event welcoming.
“a very welcoming event which is certainly worth doing”
