Why people love it

  • Cross the Harbour Bridge at 2 to 3 km (mile 1.2 to 1.9), then finish at the Opera House.
  • Public transport is free with the bib; the Metro stop is about 1 km (0.6 mi) from the start.
  • Roads are closed hard: the Harbour Bridge shuts 03:00 to 11:00 and the CBD is locked down.
  • Medical cover is rated excellent and crowds are loud on Oxford Street and in the CBD.
  • Entry is a free ballot, charged only if you win a place.

Watch out for

  • 313 m (1,027 ft) of climbing, the most of any Major, with the hard part after 30 km (19 mi).
  • Out-and-backs and repeated stretches cause tight turns and crowding near Centennial Park and Anzac Parade.
  • Bibs only at the expo, 16 km (10 mi) from the city; day 1 queues ran to 3 hours.
  • Aid is about every 2.5 km (1.6 mi) but mostly water, with few gels.
  • The ballot lets in about 1 in 3 applicants; plan charity or travel-package backups.
